Opinion on the Proposal for a Montréal Charter of Rights and Responsibilities

April 05, 2005

The Table des groupes de femmes de Montréal believes that the Montréal Charter should be more inclusive of female residents, and that it should recognize its failure to democratically represent women throughout the document. To correct this, we recommend using language that fosters such an inclusion. Specifically naming both women and men means recognizing that their living conditions are not the same.

While we are aware that the Charter will be subject to a municipal bylaw, we want to make sure it has a certain permanence and a special status. To that end, we recommend that the future Montreal Charter of Rights and Responsibilities be inserted in the City Charter.
