Newly Arrived Immigrant Women and Gender Equality: Overview of the Situation in Montreal

August 01, 2009

This study was conducted as part of the first phase of a project organized by the Table des groupes de femmes de Montréal for the period of 2009-2011, titled La caravane des solidarités (“The Caravan of Solidarity”). The primary objective of this project is to support the participation of newly arrived immigrant women, specifically young women, in society, by helping them to understand and accept its values and by helping them to get engaged in the collective struggle against gender-based discrimination that women still experience, whether they are immigrants or not.

The primary goal of the study was to develop an overview of the values of gender equality and the level of awareness regarding them among newly arrived women and young women who’ve immigrated to the island of Montreal through a survey of the relevant documentation. It also sought to collect information through a survey of the affected groups regarding the stereotypes that immigrant and young immigrant women face, stereotypes they may have about their new country of residence, their resonance with feminist values (from here or elsewhere), the type of participation they prefer and its consequences on their integration.
