Montreal feminists rally for the right to the city

Montreal, September 14, 2023 - Today, the Table de groupes de femmes de Montréal (TGFM) launches its #MontrealFeminists campaign, a feminist initiative to promote the right to the city. The launch event takes place at Resto Plateau from 4 pm to 7 pm.

The #MontrealFeminists campaign proposes solutions to urban issues that deepen inequalities around four major themes - mobility, housing, neighbourhood life and economic conditions - based on TGFM's platform of demands for the right to the city. A feminist city addresses the needs and realities of all Montrealers and improves the quality of life for as many as possible," explains Mégane Gosselin, psychosocial counsellor at Mères avec Pouvoir, a member of TGFM.

The solutions proposed in the platform and promoted by the #MontréalFeminists campaign aim to mobilize the general public, as well as the community and political spheres, to build a more inclusive and egalitarian Montreal. The launch event marks the kick-off of the campaign, bringing together feminists from all neighbourhoods to discuss current urban issues and actions to be taken over the coming year, to foster the transformation of the city.

The initiative translates into a series of actions led by the TGFM - which brings together more than 80 groups - will encourage actors from diverse backgrounds to adopt one or more of the solutions presented in the platform. "We propose different ways of responding to a variety of urban issues. Putting them into action means participating in the collective transformation of the city to build a more inclusive and egalitarian Montreal," adds Sally Richmond, General Manager of Logifem, member of TGFM.

In collaboration with four talented Montreal illustrators - Maylee Keo, Carolina Espinosa, Maïa Faddoul and Daphnée BC - the campaign features four colorful posters, stickers and clothing. "The works created by the artists offer a refreshing perspective on the actions proposed to meet the needs and realities of Montrealers in all their diversity," adds Hannah Stratford-Kurus, Development Officer and Project Manager at Women on the Rise, a TGFM member. Posters and promotional material for the campaign will be available at the event or can be ordered online after the launch.
